WORKING DURING YOUR STUDIES

It's difficult, but possible!

  • You are entitled to work during your studies once you have enrolled in an establishment that entitles you to student social security coverage.
  • If you are not a citizen of a country in the EEA (European Economic Area), you must have a residence permit and apply for a temporary work permit from the local Direction départementale du travail, de l'emploi et de la formation professionnelle - DDTEFP (Work, Employment and Training Directorate).
  • The legal working week in France is 35 hours on average. Under French law, foreign students can work up to 822.5 hours a year.
  • The gross minimum wage (SMIC) is 8.27 euros an hour (rate in 2007).

Several web sites post offers of employment.

Attention

New provisions are currently under way whereby foreign students in possession of a student residence permit will be entitled to work up to 60% of the annual authorised hours without the need for a work permit.

Money earned from part-time work in France will not cover all your expenses. It should just be treated as extra income!
